Mastering and Final version
---
One selected part with four different moments in the project progress. Normally you will only hear the final result, but here you can compare the clips and follow the procedure...
Recording version:Just some pan- and volume changes... I use this version through the whole recording procedure. Just focus on the recordings and trying to record everything as high and clean as possible.
Test version: When almost everything are recorded I use to mix for about 30 minutes (2-channels only, left/right), adding some effects and EQ. This will be a good objective. I use to listen through the recordings 1-2 days before I decided to re-arranged, add, delete or do anything else with the recordings, just before the mix.
Mix: Complete mix for about 3-4 hours, with all effects and EQ. I use head-phones 75 percent of the time when mixing. Using the analogue mixer-board and as many (individual) output channels as possible to get best results.
Mastering and Final version: Compressor, multiband limiter and EQ. The final touch...
--- Up & Downs ---
Bar and Hidden Overtones - PART 1
---
Now I will start a series with guitar related stuffs... and here comes the first clip...
Strip the clip:
This part is created as a warm-up piece. The point is playing this sequence "flowing up & down" with an "I don't care-attitude" at the same time. This will impress your audience :)
It can be difficult when speeding up, so try this slowly and try figure out all the finger combinations for the fret hand. You should pick every tone, or as many as possible in the beginning with the pick hand... Then when reaching about 160-180 BPM, you can change technique and use more legato (hammer on/pull off), to get a smoother sound... Good luck!
--- Hidden Overtones ---
Bar and Hidden Overtones - PART 2
---
Strip the clip:
Try this slowly first. This is a warm-up piece and I do everything I can to make the player lost focus or do a mistake when trying this little piece :) So, now we have come to the hidden overtones...
Hidden overtones are just "natural harmonics" baked into the "normal phrases". When speeding up it can be difficult to pick them all but that is just the point... Good luck!
--- Bar 'n Legato ---
Bar and Hidden Overtones - PART 3
---
Strip the clip:
This little piece reminds me from a period in my life where I practice "the Bar-technique" as a maniac. I'm not kidding... I probably sat with the guitar and tried every combinations you can imagine using the Bar. Bending slowly from tone to tone, using overtones, all "ghost" and "expressing" sounds, typically like Vai... and finally trying to find the Bar useful more than "a vibrato-stick"... Imagine listen to this in a half year... hmm!
Anyway... This piece growth in my minds already then, but the technique was developed later... Normally you chose tapping for this kind of piece, but I would try a new way to express the phrases so I re-arranged the tune and added a new technique which I called "the Bar and Legato-style"... Just bending with the Bar as indicated and use your fret-hand for the legato part.
Good luck :)
--- Tap That! ---
Bar and Hidden Overtones - PART 4
---
Strip the clip:
Finishing the series with a small tapping exercise... Just put your fingers in the right position and start... As usual, try it slowly then accelerate when you're ready...
Words from a Wise Man:
When boost the Gain output you get a nice tone and there will be new opportunities... But at the same time you will get more noise and unexpected sounds from open strings. There are several things you can do to get a clean tone...
1. Using a damping device over the neck, such a sock or like that. But what are you do when needed open strings?
2. You can try a Gate to reduce the background noise. This could be a fast way to get results, but the problems still there... Let’s say that you perform live without a Gate and then I'm sure you (and the audience) will hear the unexpected sounds...
3. Just try without any damping devices or effects to reducing the background noises. Use your hands and your fingers when damping strings... Just figure out yourself when needed to damp a string or two. I know you can do it... Be obstinate!
